Estonian Survival Society, Estonia
Estonian Survival Society is a non-profit organisation that was formally established in November 2001.It has been working with youngsters and children from “special needs” for almost 10 years now. This includes youngsters from special needs’ schools (study difficulties, behavioural problems). For them, the project theme of school bullying and violence is especially relevant. We have found an unique way of dealing with these children – trying to help them and to influence their life for having better chances for future – using the method of outdoor learning. The centre has experience with carrying out youth camps, organizing classroom and outdoor training for the target group and the feedback from teachers as well as children has been positive. We are also working with training the staff of these establishments. To make the training appealing to children and youth, but also adults, the form of hands-on training is used mainly. Before each practical session, though, the topic is explained in theory in as many details as needed.
The Statutes of the society states that its goal is to develop people’s survival skills in all of its forms. And combating and surviving school bullying is also a way of survival, from a very individual point of view. The tasks and activities of the society include cooperating with similar NGO in Estonia as well as abroad. It has considerable experience in cooperation projects at national level, especially in the field of environmental awareness. It has been the initiator and organizer of many local, regional and national environmental awareness raising projects, the main funding has come from Environment Investment Centre. The manager of ESS has participated in different “Train the Trainer” courses – in rural tourism, active tourism, leading an ecogroup. The training of Ecogroup management is based on Global Action Plan methods.  It now wishes to develop its European cooperation activities further, to reflect its commitment to the concept of European education and training.
